Nowaday the electronic permeates our lives, and we can not do without some of them, such as GPS. Otherwise we like to take advantage of their special features that simplify us the existence. But what to brig? And how to avoid being overloaded by the myriad of accessories that each of them may have in tow?
***
The answer is can be summed up in two words: "simplicity" and "sharing." If with regard to the "essential" everyone has their own subjective parameters (the professional photographer never resigns to his three/four lenses for digital reflex camera), for the concept of "sharing" we can also try to opt for products that have, for example, more than one use, or that can be used on different gadgets.

The first thing is the power to recharge the batteries. The industrial standardization helps us through the "USB standard". All electronic devices that we can have in tow can be chosen also according to this parameter, now widespread.
This way everything can be recharged while driving by a comfortable double usb handlebar-port, readily commercially available. Obviously the use of this power on the bike will customarily devoted to GPS device/s, which will be essential to maintain with batteries always fully charged, in case the vehicle fails and you must go on foot in search of help.
The use of this type of charging simplifies our lives even when we stopped at the hotel for the night. A multi-port unit will allow us to use a single socket for more devices. Warning amperage that this device can provide. There are several on the market that only provide 0.5A for each USB plug. In addition to need longers charging time, this amperage may not be sufficient to charge some devices. I chose a multiport that provides 1.0A on two plugs and 2.1A on the other two.

Important also have an emergency charge system, as a power bank, in the case that, for example, the search of relief for a vehicle fault continues for more days. I opted for a power bank with 6000mA with integrated solar panel, with two plugs of 0.5A and 1.0A. 6000mA may seem few, because now in the market there are also powerbank with 30.000mA, but rarely these come with a solar panel that supports their charge within a reasonable time. Carry it attached with a carabiner to water backpack, possibly with the panel facing south and not covered, it will maintain always in perfect working order.

It can also be useful in other emergency situations. For example, during the raid in the Balkans, I personally had a fault in one power plug usb on the handlebars, which I repair only two days later. In these two days the powerbank with solar panel has bypassed supply gps charging systems. The USB cables can be shared, but beware that some devices require original cables, which have within them more thick filaments to support a stronger amperage to recharge.

Even some LED flashlights can be recharged via USB cable, it can be important to also be used as additional emergency light, fixing them to the handlebars. Both in case of failure of lightning system, or whenever you need more light. Profit is also a second already-charged battery.
Always remember to also bring a headlamp, very useful if you need to shed light while your hands are occupied in repairing the vehicle.

A camera on a trip I think it's a must-have accessory, to secure as much as possible what our eyes see.
Any type of room you choose, opt for multiple memory cards of small dimensions. This is to avoid, in case of loss or demagnetization of the cards, to lose the least number of photos. Same thing you can do for the ActionCam, who will need to use the same format card or must have an adapter to do so.
Another trick to avoid losing photos/videos, is as soon as possible to upload them in a cloud. This is possible by means of a memory card reader, connected via a OTG cable to a smartphone that has this functionality.
The smartphone can also be used to take pictures or shoot video, as well as to communicate your position at home by scheduled timetables via special apps and programs.
Remember to always carry a easiest phone, to be used in case of emergency.

The smartphone can also be used as GPS, always with apps that allow this functionality offline (I use OsmAnd, which uses OpenStreetMap maps, very complete maps). This functionality is also hosted on a second smartphone a little 'dated, which is housed in a rugged enclosure and fixed on an anti-vibration support, which makes up for the small screen of my Garmin Quest2.
The only flaw, in my opinion, is the touchscreen system, which in motion forces you to stop the march to move or zoom the map, unlike the buttons that you can also operate without looking once stored-in-mind their position.

In this "base" package you can add more devices according to the specific requirements, such as a satellite phone if you go to places where cellular phone coverage is absent, or power sockets adapter if you are traveling to countries that use standard different.
On the rear of the bike can be easily uploads with many luggage. I prefer the soft saddlebags, light and capacius.
Between the two saddlebags settle only a very small waterproof bag with energy-bars and the tarp with poles of igloo tent, because too much volume in that position would adversely affect the drivability in descents enduro type, where you need to put backwards the weight of your body. I don't use tent's pegs, because it's enough to tie the ends of one side of the tent to the wheels of the bike.
Everything you can see, including the tent with poles, reaches a maximum weight of 20-25Kg.
Remember that in addition to the concepts "most used-More Easily accessible", "the most important / weak - More Protected" and "heavier - Lower" when loading the saddlebags you must consider also proximity to the exhaust.

Everything you put in saddlebags must be inserted in hard and waterproof bags (i use gelo-pack you can find at Ikea market), to protect from water and dust/sand. You must do it even if you use high quality saddlebags. Is not nice to find a drenched saddle bags when you are tired in the evening.
Out of the saddle bags you can tie also other Items. I put tubes as replacements inside big Espresso bags. Very robust and waterproof.
Under the backpack, tied at the waist, it can be fixed a fanny pack for tools. I prefer to use a simple model, as more versatile. At this also fixed an aluminum bottle for 1/2 liter of water with dissolved minerals (the bladder of the camel-back acquires an unpleasant taste if you put something other than plain water).

In offroad driving Mousse is the solution for punctures and valve-tear off while keeping a "low-pressure" tyre, essential during low-adherence situations tipical, for example, of muddy or stony hill-climbing.
In enduro competitions, but also in recreational enduro, nowadays this solution is adopted by all the competitors.
On the other hand, Mousse doesn't tolerate high temperature becoming from high speed in long distance running.
Infact in MotoRally competitions, as Dakar, are utilized different kind of Mousse, with an harder and heavy duty mixture. In any event, they are replaced frequently. Sometimes every day.
Ma noi non siamo piloti. Siamo viaggiatori.
But we are not race competitors. We are travellers. And for offroad traveller low pressure of tyres is sometimes necessary. To climb an hill-trail to cross a suggestive and isolated area, or more simply to find an exit solution to a navigation mistake.
On the other hand, during a travel, we cannot change a mousse each day.
We can use TyreBall system, but you can't change tyre pressure if you don't disassemble completely the wheel.
Solution for punctures is a heavy duty inner tube, also 4, 5mm thickness. Against valve tear off you can use a rim-lock, but if the pressure of inner tube is very low and the terrain stops your rear tyre, the rim-lock could be not enough strong. For example in sticky mud, desert sand, or when the tyre is stucked between stones.
But there's a simple and economic solution I've tested.
You need an old inner-tube (not heavy duty, to simplify potential replacement on track without ptofessional tools), a heavy-tube, a rim lock and silicon grease (simple grease, not the one used for mousse).
Take the old tube and remove the valve, then cut it along the internal circumference.
Spread the internal surface of this cutted tube with the silicon grease, and insert the heavy tube in.
Now spread also the external surface of the cutted tube, than insert this "sandwich" in the tyre and replace it as usual, clamping the rim-lock.
Why I put the silicon grease between each layer of this "sandwich-wheel"?
First because silicon grease protects rubber from extreme heating.
Then, in case of extreme pressure of the rim over the tyre, it allows the tubes to "excape" from the grab.
At least but not at last, in case of a weak action of the rim-lock, the external cutted tube can "glide" on the heavy tube, avoiding the the risk of valve-tear off.
Furthermore, using two tubes, allows you to keep constantly a lower pressure in tube. Infact while driving on plan surfaces, the tyre results as it's more inflated, because of the higher amount of rubber. While when the wheel faces an obstacle, like a stone, the tire tread envelopes it, giving more traction to the wheel.
I suggest this trick only on the rear wheel, because of the increased weight of the wheel, wich can make harder motorbike steering.
Test ride in condizioni estreme - Extreme Test-Ride
I've tested this sandwich in hard sticky mud conditions, at 0.4bar pressure. Same conditions in witch I've already teared off tube valve many times. The result is high traction and no valve-tear off.
durante il BaCaBa ruota posteriore a 0.8 bar
during BaCaBa rear wheel at 0.8 bar
Then, to test resistance to extreme heat conditions, I've used the same wheel in june, during "BaCaBa" Raid, on Italian central Apenines (you can see some videos on BaCaBa2016 playlist of AvventuRaid youtube channel).
In seven days I've covered about 300km of tarmac have been rided alternante in about 1.200km of fast white-roads, stony trails, water puddles and mud trails. Than, on the eighth day, I've covered about 600km tarmac, under a burning sun, to get back home.
All this raid at 0.8 bar pressure!!!
residui di gomma
Il risultato, come potete vedere nelle foto, è il seguente:
The result, as you can see in photos is:
- scarsi residui di polveredi gomma nello pneumatico, indice di minimo deterioramento dovuto a calore eccessivo;
-very low rubber residual in the tyre, that means really good go through tube heating;
- nessuna foratura o valvola strappata;
- no punctures or valve tear off;
grasso ancora presente
-grease still present between the two tubes.
Provate la #Sandwich-camera , e sappiatemi dire! Now you can test #Sandwich-tube , and let me know!
Grazie a #Gionata #Nencini per la sua menzione del sistema "camera sandwich" nel suo libro #Manuale #del #Motoviaggiatore ed.2018 Thanks to Gionata Nencini for his interest and his mention of "sandwich tube" sistem in his Manuale del Motoviaggiatore 2018 (Mototraveller Manual)
