PREFAZIONE-PREFACE
Questo non vuol essere un trattato sulla fotografia. Non ne sarei certo all'altezza. Vuole essere solo una piccola "guida" per trasmettere le mie esperienze nella fotografia durante i viaggi off-road, che mi hanno condotto a una serie di conclusioni nonchè indirizzato le mie scelte sugli acquisti.
This is not to be a treatise on photography. I would not be certain up to the job. It wants to be just a small "guide" to spread my experiences in photography during motorbikes off-road travels, which led me to a series of conclusions and also guided my decisions on purchases.

Durante un viaggio, sia esso in moto, in treno, in auto, a piedi, i nostri occhi si riempono di panorami, scorci e situazioni del tutto particolari, il tutto filtrato dall'emozione e dai sentimenti che ci pervadono al momento.
Per questo alcune delle foto che, al momento in cui venivano scattate potevano farci illudere di aver colto in pieno l'essenza del viaggio, al nostro ritorno appaiono banali agli occhi degli altri, quandanche ai nostri stessi.
A volte l'emozione che proviamo in quel momento viene cancellata nel ricordo dalle successive che proveremo nei giorni seguenti, magari piú forti e permanenti.
Cosicchè il primo consiglio che posso dare è: scattate quante piú foto potete! Io ne scatto anche durante la marcia. Sono quelle che maggiormente danno l'idea di "viaggio".
L'era del digitale ci aiuta molto, in quanto le immagini possono essere riviste successivamente sullo schermo del PC di casa, senza alcun costo. Cosa che non avveniva quando si utilizzavano le pellicole. Ogni sviluppo aveva un costo, e quindi le inquadrature venivano selezionate ancor prima dello scatto.
Inoltre i rullini temevano il calore eccessivo, la luce del sole diretta.
Adesso i moderni supporti su schede di memoria occupano pochissimo spazio e contengono migliaia di inquadrature.
During a trip, whether it is in motion, by train, by car, on foot, our eyes are filled with landscapes, views and very unusual cases, all filtered daii emotion and feelings that pervade currently.
Why some of the photos that were taken at the time when they could deceive us had caught the full essence of the trip, upon our return appear trivial in the eyes of others, quandanche to our own.
Sometimes the emotion we feel at that time in the memory is erased by later that we will try in the following days, maybe more strong and permanent.
So that the first piece of advice I can give is: how many more images you shot! I will snap even while driving. (ATTENTION !!! Dangerous and not recommended, often prohibited by law) are the ones that most give the idea of "journey."
The digital era helps us a lot, because the images can be reviewed later on your home PC screen for free. That was not the case when you were using films. Any development had a cost, and then the shots were selected even before shooting.
Also the rollers feared the heat and the direct sunlight.
Now the modern memory cards take up very little space and contain thousands of shots.
LE OPZIONI DISPONIBILI-AVAILABLE OPTIONS
Il mercato offre al giorno d'oggi tutta una serie di opzioni.
Si va dallo smartphone di qualitá, che ormai ha sensori fotografici superiori alle prime digitali in commercio, fino alle reflex con ottiche intercambiabili.
Ma vediamo quali sono i pro e i contro di ogni scelta.
The market offers nowadays a whole range of options.They range from high-quality smartphones, which now has photographic sensors beyond the first generation of compact digital-cameras, to the Reflex with interchangeable lenses. But let's see what are both the pros and cons of each choice.
1.Smatphones.
Come dicevo ormai hanno buoni sensori di cattura dell'immagine, sono molto pratici da avere al seguito e di ridotte dimensioni. Dispongono anche tutti della possibilitá di georeferenziare l'immagine, sia dal software preinstallato, sia tramite APP gratuite. Mancano però di zoom ottico e quasi sempre temono le intemperie.
As I already said, have good image capture sensors, they are very practical to have in tow and small. They also have all the possibilities of geo-reference the image, both from preinstalled software, or via free APPs. However, lack of optical zoom and almost always fear the weather.
2.Compatte digitali-Digital Cameras
Rispetto agli smartphone hanno sensori di cattura dell'immagine migliori e zoom ottici di buona fattura. Il loro handicap maggiore sta nella delicatezza del sistema di zoom, i cui ingranaggi sono facilmente attaccabili da particelle di polvere (o sabbia se vi recate in un deserto sabbioso) e acqua. Quindi bisogna prestare loro molta cura. Sia nel riporle protette dalle intemperie, sia nell'utilizzarle nei momenti poco favorevoli dal punto di vista di possibile infiltrazioni di agenti esterni. Pena il restare senza apparecchiatura fotografica, magari a metá viaggio. È vero che vi sono delle custodie che le rendono impermeabili, ma ne riducono la praticitá d'uso e la compattezza.
Compared to smartphones they have better sensors to capture images and optical zoom of good craftsmanship. Their greatest handicap is the delicacy of the zoom system, whose gears are easily attacked by dust-particles (or sand if you go into a sandy desert) and water. So you have to pay them attention. Both in the putting away them protecting from the elements, both in using them in less favorable moments from the point of view of possible infiltration of external agents. Worth the stay without photographic equipment, maybe at half trip. It is true that there are cases that make them waterproof, but they will reduce the practicality of use and compactness.
3.Actioncam
Le Actioncam adesso hanno altissime risoluzioni e possono scattare foto. Ma l'obiettivo fisso unito alla grande apertura dello stesso (fino a 170°, o addirittura 360° per le 4K) fa sì che non sia molto pratica per riprendere foto,
Sicuramente, se utilizzata per lo scopo cui è stata progettata, fornisce quel "di più" nella creazione di filmati e presentazioni.
The Action Cam now have very high resolutions and can take pictures. 4.Digitali "Rugged"-"Rugged" cameras

Hanno le stesse caratteristiche delle compatte, tranne per lo zoom ottico (attualmente limitato a 5x) dato che si muove all'interno del corpo della macchina stessa. Sono antipolvere, water-resistant (quando non addirittura resistenti alle immersioni anche fino a 30m), antiurto, georeferenziano le immagini e possono essere gestite anche attraverso lo smartphone in remoto.
They have the same characteristics of the compact cameras, except for the optical zoom (currently limited to 5x) because it moves inside the body of the machine itself. 5.Mirrorless
Offrono la qualitá di ripresa delle reflex e possono avere ottiche intercambiabili, con dimensioni piú compatte rispetto peró alle "sorelle maggiori". Hanno a disposizione tutti gli accessori delle reflex, dal flash esterno, al gps, al telecomando.
Anche queste subiscono l'attacco degli agenti atmosferici, e anche per queste esistono coperture apposite per proteggerle durante l'uso.
Sono un po' meno pratiche per il trasporto in moto in un Raid off-road, e il loro utilizzo prevede necessariamente una sosta.
They offer the quality of reflex cameras and you can interchange lenses, with more compact dimensions but respecting the "superior sisters". They have at their disposal all the accessories of the reflex, by the external flash, the GPS, the remote control. Even these undergo the attack of atmospheric agents, and also for these exist enclosed covers to protect them during use. They're a bit less practical for transportation on motorbike in an off-road raid, and usage provides necessary stop.
6.Reflex digitali-Reflex cameras
Ormai con prezzi abbordabili sono il top nella cattura delle immagini, ricche di funzioni e potenzialitá. Sono peró ancora piú ingombranti rispetto alle mirrorless, sia per il trasporto che per l'utilizzo, e subiscono anche loro gli agenti esterni. Anche per queste esistono ovviamente coperture per proteggerle durante l'utilizzo.

However are even more unwieldy than the mirrorless, for both transport and use They also undergo contamination of external agents. Also for these ones, obviously, exist covers to protect them during use.
LA SCELTA-THE CHOICE
Viaggiando di solito con bagaglio ridotto all'osso, e non essendo certo un fotografo professionista, le macchine Reflex e Mirrorless sarebbero per me un inutile spreco di potenzialitá e spazio, nonchè rischierebbero di rompersi, anche in una banale caduta della moto dal cavalletto.
Finora ho utilizzato macchine digitali compatte, ma dopo ogni viaggio mi ritrovavo a doverne comprarne una nuova perchè per l'intrusione di polvere o sabbia si bloccavano i meccanismi dello zoom. Per questo motivo mi rivolgevo alla "fascia entry-level" di questo tipo di apparecchiature, rinunciando cosí alla georefenziazione dell'immagine tramite gps, il che mi costringeva a svolgere un lavoro sfiancante al termine del viaggio: quello di incrociare i dati della ripresa con le tracce registrate dal gps per conoscere l'esatta posizione dello scatto.
Ho sempre utilizzato lo smartphone , e continuerò a farlo, per immagini da pubblicare velocemente sul blog del viaggio o sui social network.
Come avrete capito da quest'anno la mia scelta è ricaduta su una macchina "rugged". La porto, come facevo con le compatte, in una custodia con apertura a zip attaccata vicino allo spallaccio sinistro dello zaino, in modo che, anche durante la marcia, usando solo la mano sinistra, posso prenderla, scattare, e riporla. Assicuro inoltre la macchina stessa allo zaino tramite un laccetto, perchè non cada se dovesse sfuggirmi di mano. Laccetto sufficientemente lungo in modo che non intralci le diverse inquadrature sui 180° del senso di marcia, ma non di una lunghezza tale da far sbattere la macchina stessa sulla moto, nel caso dovessi lasciarla improvvisamente per riprendere il controllo del manubrio per una manovra di emergenza.
Unico accessorio che porto al seguito è un piccolo treppiede telescopico, che entra tranquillamente nella tasca laterale dei pantaloni tecnici da moto, o in un piccolo borsello legato al manubrio con gli altri oggetti di immediato utilizzo.
Usually traveling with slightest luggage, and not being surely a professional photographer, Mirrorless and Reflex cameras would be for me a waste of space and potentialities, as well as in danger of breaking, even in a trivial fall of the bike from the sidestand.
So far I have used compact digital cameras, but after I found myself having to buy a new one every trip, because of the intrusion of dust or sand was blocking the zoom mechanisms. That's the reason why I purchase "entry-level" of this type of equipment, thus giving up the image georeferencing through GPS. That ingenerate an extra exhausting work at the end of the journey: cross the shooting datas with tracks recorded by the GPS to know the exact location of the shot.
I always use the smartphone, and I will continue to do so, but just for images to be published quickly on the blog of the trip or on social networks.
As you can see from this year my choice fell on a "rugged" machine. I carry it, as I did with the compact, in a case with zip opening hung to the left shoulder strap of the backpack, so that, even while driving, using only his left hand, I can take, shot, and store it. I also assure the camera to the backpack with a lace, to avoid its fall in case of grab-losing. The lace is enough long so that it does not hinder different shots on the 180 ° of the direction of travel, but not of a length such as to slam the camera itself on the motorcycle, in case I leave the grab suddenly to hold the handlebar for an urgency.
The only accessory I carry in tow is a small telescopic tripod, that easily fits in the side pocket of motorcycle technical pants, or in a small bag tied to the handlebar with the other objects of immediate use.

Oltre al giá citato cavalletto vi sono le schede di memoria. Preferisco usare schede di piccole dimensioni (16gb) in grande quantitá, rispetto a un numero minore di dimensioni piú ragguardevoli. Questo perchè le schede possono cancellarsi o andare perdute, ed avere un minore numero di foto salvate su quella che ha perso i dati, permette di evitare di perderne un numero eccessivo. Un brutto shock al rientro dal viaggio.
Inoltre porto con me un piccolo cavo OTG e un adattatore usb, che associati ad uno smartphone che dispone di questa funzionalitá, mi permette di caricare su un drive o un cloud on line le immagini del giorno, una volta trovata una connessione wifi. Questo riduce la possibilitá che alcuni scatti vadano persi e permette nel contempo, di poter liberare della memoria dalle schede qualora ne abbiamo bisogno.
Si potrebbe effettuare un backup su un hard disk portatile, ma rimarrebbe l'inconveniente della possibile perdita di dati in caso di guasto.
Per le schede prediligo quelle di formato micro-sd che, con gli opportuni adattatori, possono essere usate su tutti i dispositivi (smartphone, helmet cam, etc.)
Besides the already mentioned stand there are the memory cards. I prefer to use small cards (16GB) in large amount, as compared to a smaller number of more considerable size. This is because the card-datas or the cards itselves may be lost, and having a smaller number of photos stored on the lost sd-card, avoid losing too many shots. A nasty shock at return from the trip!
I also carry a small OTG cable and a USB adapter, which combined with a smartphone that has this functionality, it allows me to load on an online drive or cloud images of the day, once found a wifi connection. This reduces the possibility that some shots became erased and allows, at the same time, to set free memory cards in case of needing.
You could also make a backup on a portable hard drive, but the inconvenience of data loss in case of failure would remain.
Personally I prefer micro-sd card format wich, with appropriate adapters, can be used on all devices (smartphones, helmet cam, etc.)
